From the Library Director:
2024 was a year filled with challenges, changes and forward motion.
In May 2024, we lost Amy LaRocca, our Head of Reference Services. Amy dedicated her 24 years of service to not only her staff but to the community of Suffern. She is and will continue to be missed.
While we grieve, we honor Amy’s memory and carry forward in our daily work the commitment that she embodied to the Library and all of those it serves. Staff continue to offer creative hybrid and virtual programs, so that patrons with growing lists of responsibilities can participate as much as possible. Virtual resources, including ebooks, digital media, and reference assistance by phone, email, and inperson ensure that services are as available for all patrons, including those with physical limitations or without transportation.
The Library also continues to offer hotspots for loan, as well as one-on-one computer assistance to those that need either or both. Breaking barriers to access and ensuring equity will continue to be a focus for the Library in the years to come.
With the completion of our first construction project, our outdoor patio has been the home of many concerts and morning yoga programs. Our outdoor reading gazebo is filled with children’s laughter when Ms. Jennifer reads during story time.
We partnered with schools, the Village and local organizations to deliver content and promote library resources to our community.
The 2024/25 library budget was passed 158 yes to 30 no, with an increase of $64,863.00. Incumbent Warren Berbit, Mario Pensa and Michael Minevich were re-elected for three-year terms.
Our updated strategic plan, first released in 2019, provides our team with the framework and strategy for the future. We talked with library customers, community members, partners, community groups, and advocates to develop a strategy that builds upon our mission. The plan rearticulates our mission and vision to support and connect our communities and ensure everyone is respected, welcomed, and represented. We look forward to the journey in service to our community.
2025 brings new opportunities and challenges. The adaptability and compassion of the Suffern Free Library, its dedicated staff, our vibrant partners, and the public will remain essential. Thank you all for the important roles you play in the well-being of our Library.
